Love the idea of later schools starts. That would really help the highschoolers. Could the new leadership put a halt to the twice yearly time change? I think that would be helpful, too.
LOVE THIS a part of my practice to wake up early every morning, drink water and do some yang exercise right away eat a healthy breakfast and stop eating by 6 PM get off the screens and takE IN the sky
I am glad the article mentions the disruptive influence of technology. 5G all around us and how to reduce and shield from it deserves special consideration in this context, IMO.
Prominent neurologists and sleep researchers say it's harming us, but no one in power will listen. I've tried contacting my own elected officials and others with documentation year after year, but it seems the Senate continues to vote unanimously to continue DST.
There are many myths about how DST got started, but the truth is it had to do with money. And powerful people in "sunshine" states -- FL, NM, AZ -- especially want to keep it going, even if it kills kids (studies show there are more accidents because of DST).
Humans evolved to get up with the sun, so we shouldn't be altering the time on our clocks.
And yeah, putting down the phones/tablets a couple hours before midnight wouldn't hurt either.
The clock change x2/yr is probably more than just irksome.
What I'm unsure of is if the clock change ritual ceased, would it be better to maintain EST or EDST ) I'm in the Northeast?
One arguement I hear for changing back every Fall to EST is it gets brighter earlier in the morning (it's really a clock-setting thing imo). This supposedly makes it safer for travel to school by elementary through high school students. One point in the writing is these early times really are not in the student's best interest from a wake/sleep cycle perspective.
If the DST regimen was permanent, and school started at 8AM or probably better at 9AM, this argument becomes moot.
It also would be brighter at the end of the school day.
Thank you. I was a teacher for 4 years and a registered dietitian for 33. 15 of which were in the hospital, with a high patient caseload and turnover rate.
I’ve seen a lot, and heard sleep appropriately labeled “vitamin S” by one of the best in the field of healthcare, Muneeza Ahmed. She’s a medical intuitive who completely resolved my longstanding back issues, including pain and range of motion (6 months after a car accident) in one week’s time, by following her accurate advice…which included getting enough sleep.
I truly hope the MAHA movement will be successful in making this and other positive changes for improved health, functionality and happiness. All your efforts are much appreciated. 💐💕💫
Well, highschoolers could go to bed earlier than 11pm for one. That would be easier than shifting schedules around which will only make the day longer and they will go to bed even later. Where are their parents? Mine made me be IN bed by 10pm at the latest to get up at 6am. Somewhere around 9 my mother would start telling us to shower and put our clothes out. I'd be willing to bet that kids are staying up much later than the 11pm cited in the article and using computers and phones etc, until they don't sleep soon or well when they do go to bed. The time is there for sleep, why aren't kids and adults taking it? Maybe because they'd like to have a life after work or school?
Margaret, although falling asleep at 10pm would be ideal for teenagers, the simple fact is that their sleep wake cycle shifts to where falling asleep before 11pm is challenging, even if they practice iproper sleep hygiene. Also, you should know that when school districts move the start time later, teenagers go to be at the same time and simply get more sleep. Please visit startschoollater.net to learn more
If you move the start time later, the school day is also over later. No matter how you cut it they have to get the hours in that are required by the state. I see the problem as not so much sleep cycle as trying to cram in late hour activity pushing back bedtime. When I was a kid school nights were sacrosanct. You did your social activities on the weekends, and we didn't have computers and internet to surf, social media, smart phones and parents who let it all go on. We had to stop watching TV an hour before bedtime when we got ready for the next day. Routine may not be so favored these days, but it works. There's just not enough time for sleep with all the activities available to kids today. The parents are the ones with their children at night (hopefully). They're the only ones who could do something, although unfortunately some are out at second jobs, reducing their own rest. Cumulatively, much of the trouble we have today is the result of deliberate breaking down of our families, education and society by Marxist efforts. We're the only ones who can wake up and change that. Starting school later will do nothing.
Sleep deprivation is one of the tools used by cults and similar organizations to break down resistance/individuality (ask anyone who has been in Marine Corps boot camp).
Highschool is the departure point from childhood to our wonderfully caring neoliberal flavored capitalist economy, a young adult's portal to the American dream- (And as George Carlin said "it's called the American dream because you gotta be asleep to believe it").
Sleep deprivation is definitely not in our best interests. It might be in the interests of an extractive industry in which teens were valued mainly as a feedstock.
Thank you for addressing the important subject of sleep. IMHO, one thing is missing, though and I´d love for RFK Jr to look into it.
You can only have a restful sleep when your nervous system is in sync. And whoever suffers from childhood trauma (attachment - and/or developmental trauma) or PTSD has a totally dysbalanced nervous system thus no restful sleep is possible and you do not wake up regenerated.
The avoidance of attachment - and developmental trauma play an important part in children´s health. There´s great work done by e.g. Gabor Maté (The myth of normal), Bessel van der Kolk (The body keeps the score), Stephen Porges (Polyvagal Theory) on the subject.
"Emotional stress is a major cause of physical illness, from cancer to autoimmune conditions and many other chronic diseases. The brain and body systems that process emotions are intimately connected with the hormonal apparatus, the nervous system, and in particular the immune system." Dr Gabor Maté
What Ails Us | Gabor Maté Challenges The Way We Think About Chronic Illness, Drug Addiction, And Attention-Deficit Disorder
Thanks so much, I deeply appreciate it. It´s way more widespread than expected. You might also like to check out the study (from 1998!) by Vincent Felitti on ACEs ( the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study), that´s were it all started for Gabor Maté.
BTW, Gabor Maté worked in Vancouver´s Downtown Eastside as a physician for 12 years, treating addicts. And he found out WHY people became addicted (it´s not genes or a disease or lack of will power). He started to listen to their life stories and then came to what he calls his mantra: "Don´t ask why the addiction but WHY THE (emotional) PAIN." "Not all traumatized people become addicted but all addicts were traumatized." His book "In the realm of hungry ghosts" descirbes it all in detail.
Please do check into this as also Gabor Maté´s results are all based on mainstream science, his findings have, unfortunately, not yet become mainstream knowledge. Maybe this can change now, it´s what the pblic needs to know. A healthy society starts with a secure attachment to a mother who has all the support she needs in attending to her child´s needs, esp. for the early 3 years.
That is the basis of it all and if you then simultanously eliminate all the poisons/ toxins from the environment and educate people on healthy eating as RFK Jr has promised to do- well, then a truly healthy society is within reach. America could lead the way here - and hopefully other countries will follow.
Try Sleepy Time EXTRA tea from Celestial Seasonings. An herbal tea that you can feel working after only 1/2 a cup! (not an advertisement...just advice)
Here where I live, northern suburb of Chicago, the high school does a later start. So in accommodating teenagers’ need for sleep, we’re sacrificing the well-being of the littles. The issue I have is having my preschooler—now 2nd grader take a 7am bus to school. It’s brutal! He starts school half asleep and very often skips breakfast because he’s not hungry that early in the morning. For us it is the busing issue. Adding more buses won’t be the solution. Traffic is already jammed up as it is! Anyway, love your writing Emilie! I look forward to reading it all! ❤️

Yes indeed, daylight savings time NEEDS TO GO. It was supposed to be a WWII temporary expedient and is now as outdated as those WWII steel pennies!
I'm liking this as hard as I can.

beautiful morning and night routine, Kelli :)

We need to cut down on the "my great intentions start tomorrow" and start emphasizing starting *now*.
I'm not going to lie to myself or the readers
Love this Emilie!! I absolutely love a good night's sleep! It is never over rated!
Thanks, Kim! I'm getting one tonight! Feeling inspired
In a related vein, how about we end DST?

Read by candlelight before bed? Rose lives in an alternate universe. . . one without kids.

I can’t wait to see you completely unleashed in DC! Get a chainsaw from Elon and take down the vile corruption. Go Bobby Go! We love you
Another great read from Emilie! And I can relate to the topic.
