Sigh. As long as the votes continue to be "counted" (ROFL!) in secret, none of the above matters. "Counting" in secret is what the computers are for. Those who get to write the software that runs the computers choose the "winner", regardless of who anyone votes for. The voters are only needed for lending legitimacy to the farce. http://www.thepolemicist.net/2016/09/strike-vote.html
Pride and shame are a fundamental aspect of the human psyche. They certainly aren’t “the same”, albeit I agree they are intimately connected.
Dunno if it was your intent, but you are shaming them yourself here. Do you honestly think that Reiner and folks actually feel shame about their “narcissism and lust of control?”. You may want them to feel shame about something, but that doesn’t mean they actually do.
Joyce Vance talks about "a decision not to vote will have as much force in determining the outcome of the 2024 election as much as voting in it will. "
In California, the Democratic Party controlled legislature shamelessly passes bill after bill that makes it easier and easier for the Democratic Party to rig our elections
“ We can let ourselves be shamed into or out of voting this way or that, but maybe what is called for in these times is a remembrance of, or a desire to feel, the opposite of shame. Honor. We have that right. We have that power. ”
I agree that we should remember the opposite of shame, honor, aka pride. But people can be led into voting this way or that with praise as much as disparagement. One is a carrot and the other a stick, and those are both common ways people are politically influenced. Since we are social animals, praise and disparagement are always going to play a part in politics. Possibly one thing we can do is to disparage using them to entirely short circuit peoples’ reasoning, and praising people for diligently using their independent reason to assess ideas.
With regard to feeling honor though, it’s not sufficient to suggest people should remember feeling honor… because people can feel honor about just about anything. People can feel honor about being in the KKK. And that should be disparaged, right?
As for “Adam and Eve”; the only shameful behavior demonstrated in that primitive, barbaric story is that of the character Yahweh, punishing his supposed children for curiosity and disobedience to a cruel nonsensical command that wouldn’t make sense to children who hadn’t acquired a sense of good and evil. If they had it already, they would have sensed the evil of Yahweh. It’s disappointing people still revere the book of cruelties the myth is found in. But it is also a testament to the power of honor and shame: people are routinely and ritually shamed for not revering it, and honored for expressing fealty to it — despite it being filled with irrational and detestable content.
It's going to be a crazy year!

"Pride and Shame...one and the same."

This was an excellent, informative, extremely accessible column. Enjoyed the entire piece. Keala Kelly is a great writer!
