After thinking about Theo Wilson’s message on RFK, Jr.’s efforts to heal the divide, it occurred to me that the people suffering with addiction are falling into the empty chasm of despair that the loss of social cohesion has created. According to the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, 21% of Americans used an illicit drug in 2022 - SAMHSA Announces National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) Results Detailing Mental Illness and Substance Use Levels in 2021 | HHS.gov. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 11.3% of adults had an Alcohol Use Disorder - Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) in the United States: Age Groups and Demographic Characteristics | National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) (nih.gov).

We all know someone who has struggled with addiction. Many of us have dealt with the affliction.

RFK, Jr. is a recovering addict with forty years of sobriety. Kennedy attends twelve-step program meetings regularly. He speaks of his addiction with honesty and clarity. There was a time in our nation’s history where no one running for office would speak about struggles with addiction. RFK, Jr. crossed that barrier years ago and has a plan to bring healing to those affected by addiction.
